Welcome to MUMC
"The Merchants of Upper Market & Castro"

MUMC consists of a membership of about 250 local businesses led by a thirteen member Board of Directors. A part-time administrator handles correspondence, database management, light bookkeeping, and communication regarding events, projects and concerns of the community.

A Diverse Community & Popular Visitor Destination

Though The Castro is a blend of residential buildings, historical homes and commercial businesses, it is also known worldwide for its colorful history as a Gay Mecca. A vibrant part of San Francisco’s thriving tourism economy, The Castro is considered one of the top five visitor points of interest in The City.

The Upper Market & Castro Region

This large commercial district encompasses businesses all the way down Market Street to the Gay & Lesbian Center and several streets which transect Market and Castro Streets, such as Church, Noe, Sanchez, Collingwood, Diamond and streets numbered 14th through 19th. Throughout the district there are concentrated commercial pockets which each have their own unique character (and flavor!). Though many visitors come to pay homage to the enormous rainbow flag flying year round at the Harvey Milk Plaza and to admire the elegant art deco facade of the Castro Theatre, one could spend an entire day exploring the district from one end to another.

MUMC supports a mix of merchants, restaurants, and services. Small, unique owner-operated businesses are especially encouraged to locate here. Castro District shoppers enjoy quality, wit, great customer service and unique items not found in every shopping neighborhood. Conveniences include many public transportation options and several 24-hour diners through the blend of specialty shops found alongside our streets. There are ATM machines conveniently located throughout the district.

Politically Active

MUMC is involved in civic efforts and small business issues. It lobbies The City for the well-being of its merchants and strives to maintain harmony within the neighborhood. MUMC has been successful in its efforts to maintain diversity, dissuade panhandling, preserve historic architecture, direct beautification projects and produce events and activities that reflect the community’s appreciation of a good time for all.

Events & Meetings

MUMC meets on the first Thursday of each month (except in January and July) at 9am at the Eureka Valley Recreation Center at 100 Collingwood (x 18th Street).

Promotion of the Upper Market & Castro
